Inheritance from a younger self

portret of John Vernon Lord in my journal

I’ve been an admirer of the illustrations by John Vernon Lord. Looking at his pages you would think he is troubled with the ‘horror vacui,’ the angst for empty spaces. But in an interview, he tells the story of his grandmother. She told him to draw into every corner because paper was so scarce during the war. I started to think of which limitation(s) in my youth came to fruition later on. I remember privacy and space were lacking. Probably that is the reason why I’m comfortable in a small studio drawing and writing in a journal.

How about you? Did you inherit something from your early days?
